The nation watched in horror as paramedics frantically tried to save a very young man from dying. Feelings of disbelief surged through our minds as we tried to make any sense out of this heartless and cowardly act of violence. How could one of Canada’s own citizens act with such an evil?
Canada is such a peaceful country. As Canadians, we are certainly far removed from the atrocities of war. Our soil has not seen active combat in ages. Have we been lulled into a false sense of security?
When our Prime Minister addressed the nation, we listened to his words all the while wondering that somehow this must be some terrible mistake: a terrorist in our midst?
On Wednesday, October 29th, The Windsor Star’s front page showed a picture of 5 year old Marcus Cirillo, son of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo with a look of complete bewilderment. This precious child should have never lost his father.
It was heartbreaking to see Katherine Cirillo openly crying over her son’s casket. Unspeakable tragedy. Senseless loss.
It is times like these when we search for answers.
Looking For Answers
Our Heavenly Father cares deeply for us and is always with us. In times of trouble, God opens his loving arms to us and comforts us with His perfect love. He understands our pain and our confusion. He offers peace and restoration.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28 – 30)
God’s message is clear. He was the perfect example of servitude and sacrifice.
In the book of John, Jesus shocks his disciples by wrapping a towel around his waist, kneeling low to the ground and washing the disciples feet.
I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I shall tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master…. (John 13:15-16)
Corporal Nathan Cirillo went to work that morning with the knowledge that he was serving his country. Little did he know that he became an example of what pure selflessness looks like. Nathan brought a nation to its feet, renewed pride in our country and a conviction for doing the right thing.

As a veteran, I was ready to make the ultimate sacrifice, fortunately that was not necessary. Seeing a young soldier taken in such a tragic way makes one reflect on the loss of what that young man could have accomplished. The face of his young son also shows how much impact this had on his life and other survivors.
We can take comfort in God’s promises, and in times like these I think of holding on to God in a storm and trusting that we will come through it. I have seen people react in a caring and compassionate way, maybe this is the good from it.
Really appreciate your service to our country Jim. Veterans have such a deep understanding of what the price of freedom really costs. I agree with you that God can always be glorified through the actions of faith and caring. People want to show compassion and service to others
